The traditional method of total excreta collection was applied, using 30 to 40 day old male Ross 308 broiler chickens. One hundred and eight broiler chickens were used, randomly assigned to a 3x3 factorial experimental design. The room temperatures were 14 C (cold), 25 °C (thermoneutral) and 32 °C (hot) and the three diets were 100% maize, 100% sorghum with tannin and 100% sorghum without tannin, with four replicates of each. The digestibility coefficients for the dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, ether extract, mineral matter and nitrogen-free extract were determined. It was observed that all the digestibility coefficients were higher in the hot chamber and lower in the cold chamber, and that these... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate, in Nellore heifers, intake and digestibility of hydrolyzed sugarcane stored for different periods. The experimental design used was a 4 × 4 Latin square, four diets, four Nellore heifers with ruminal cannulas (initial body weight 285.4±23.08 kg and average initial age 14 months) and four periods of 21 days. The diets were composed by fresh sugarcane (time zero) or hydrolyzed sugarcane with addition of 0.5% of hydrated lime, stored for 24, 48 or 72 hours, as the unique forage. Intake and digestibility of feed fractions, nitrogen balance, microbial synthesis efficiency, total number of ruminal protozoans and ammoniacal nitrogen did not significantly change by storing sugarcane with addition of 0.5% of hydrated... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the production performance and carcass traits of feedlot steers fed a high-energy diet supplemented with doses of an enzyme complex (0, 2.5, 5.0, and, 7.5 g animal−1 day−1). Thirty-two ½ Angus ½ Nellore crossbred steers at an average age of 12 months and an average initial weight of 422 kg, were kept in a feedlot for 77 days. The roughage-free diet was composed of a mixture of whole corn grain and a protein-mineral-vitamin mix at a constant ratio of 85:15, on a dry matter basis. A completely randomized block design was adopted, consisting of four treatments and four replicates, in which each replicate was represented by a stall with two animals. Each gram of product added to the diet led to a decrease of... |

The present study assessed the effect of adding water and phytase to middling diets on digestibility, metabolism, performance, carcass characteristics, and the bone mineralization of growing and finishing pigs. For the digestibility trial, 16 pigs were distributed in randomized blocks, placed in digestibility cages following a 2 x 2 factorial design (dry and wet diets, with and without phytase). For the performance trial, 48 piglets were distributed into a complete randomized design. During the growing period, wet diets presented higher values for digestibility and energy metabolism. In the finishing stage, the addition of water to the feed caused a greater weight gain and interfered with the carcass length. The balance of the mineral matter and the... |

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of source and rate of sulphur (S) on yield and quality of a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop and a permanent naturalized pasture in southern Chile. In the wheat trial, calcium sulphate (SCA) and magnesium sulphate (SMG) were tested (45 and 90 kg S ha-1). In the pasture trial, an additional potassium-magnesium sulphate (SKMG) treatment was considered. In both trials fertilizers were sprayed and a control treatment was included. In the wheat trial all aspects affecting yield components were evaluated: yield, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and S concentration in plants and seed, and albumen quality were evaluated. In the pasture trial, the yield and nutritional quality (foliar concentration of N, P, S... |

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the effect of variation in the amount of total dietary fiber (TDF) in sow diets, provided from 74 to 114 days of gestation, on the digestibility of nutrients and energy during gestation, as well as productivity and metabolism during gestation and lactation. Thirty-three sows were used in a randomized experimental design. The amounts of TDF in three treatment diets were 156, 223, and 282 g kg−1. The daily intake of nutrients and energy was similar for all diets the entire period of gestation, differing only in the volume of ration consumed, which was 2.1, 2.2, and 2.4 kg day−1 (days 74 to 90) and 2.5, 2.6, and 2.8 kg day−1 (days 91 to 111) for the 156, 223, and 282 g kg−1 TDF diets, respectively. During gestation, the... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to study the effect of thermal and non-thermal processing methods on chemical composition, quality indicators and apparent digestibility of soybean nutrients. For this, four processing methods (unprocessed, extruded, thermal, and gamma radiation) were applied on two soybean varieties (Katol & Caspian). Rations were formulated based on kinds of soybean (processed and unprocessed). The experiment was continued using 600 male Ross broiler chickens during 3 feeding phases (starter, grower, and finisher). Traits were measured and analyzed with the Lsmeans procedure by SAS software. The results showed the interaction effects of soybean varieties and processing methods were significant on the crude fiber, calcium, and... |

The effect of feeding time was studied in rainbow trout fed different dietary levels of fat. Fish were fed either 1 h after light on in the morning or 1 h after light off in the evening with a low energy diet (LE, 6 % lipid) or a high energy diet (HE, 23 % lipid). Regardless of the diet, apparent digestibility and post prandial protein synthesis were higher in fish fed in the morning than in those fed at the beginning of the night. In fish fed the LE diet in the morning, growth performance and nutrient retention efficiency tended to be higher than in those fed at the beginning of the night. In contrast, fish fed the HE diet in the morning had lower protein growth rate, protein content and protein retention efficiency than those fed in the evening. These... |

The quality of sorghum BRS-610 silages in seven stages of grain maturity, between the milky and dry stage, for determination of the ideal moment of ensilage was evaluated. The silos were open after 56 days of fermentation. The values for dry matter of silages increased from 199 to 473g/kg or from 19.9 to 47.3%, with the advance of stage maturity of grains. As for the quality of fermentation, the silages may be classified as excellent quality in every stage of maturity. The lower values of neutral detergent fiber, 539g/kg or 53.9%, and acid detergent fiber, 307g/kg or 30.7%, were observed between the milky/dough to dough/dent stages. Regression analysis indicated an increase in values of lignin - 0.3 unit por stage - and reduction in values of in vitro dry... |

Five castrated and ruminally cannulated Saanen goats (±48.19kg) were used to evaluate intake, digestibility and rumen fermentation parameters of diets with inactive dry yeast as a soybean meal substitute (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%). Goats were randomly assigned to a 5×5 (five levels of dry yeast x five periods) Latin square design. Diets were composed of corn silage (40%), ground corn, soybean meal and/or dry yeast and mineral supplement. The intake and digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and TC were not influenced by the treatments. However, EE intake showed negative linear effect. The TDN content did not change with the inclusion of dry yeast in the diets. The pH, N-NH3 concentration and rumen short-chain fatty acids content did not differ among diets. Rumen... |

The aim of this work was to study the effect of inclusion of citrus pulp in the diet of finishing pigs. In the first trial, 16 Topigs barrows with 80.5±4.7 kg of initial BW were used to evaluate the digestibility of citrus pulp. Having 18.85% of neutral detergent fiber and 41.18% of neutral detergent soluble fiber, citrus pulp showed as a feasible alternative ingredient to be added in the diets of feed restricted finishing pigs. Second trial tested the use of 0, 10, 20, 30% of citrus pulp in the diets of 36-feed-restricted barrows with initial BW of 83.7±5.1 kg. A quadratic trend (P<0.05) as function of citrus pulp levels was observed for daily weight gain and number of experimental days to reach 130kg BW, being the best estimated inclusion levels of... |
